Method 1: Soap, Clean Water, and Vinegar

If the stain is still fresh, you can use this simple trick to remove it. To start, apply a small amount of laundry soap, or a mild detergent, directly onto the spot.

Once the soap is in place, wet a clean cloth with lukewarm water, and dab at the stain, making sure that no more red liquid is transferred onto the garment. As soon as cloth turns pink, stop blotting. The next step is to rinse the tie, using a new damp cloth.

When you have rinsed off the soap, mix 2 tablespoons of white vinegar into a cup of clean cold water, then soak a fresh cloth in this mixture, and gently dab at the stain until it disappears. You may need to repeat this process several times.

Once all traces of the stain are gone, wash tie with cold water, and let it air-dry away from direct sunlight.

Method 2: Milk and Salt

Milk and salt can be used to remove red wine stains from ties. Simply mix two tablespoons of salt into a cup of cold milk, and dip a clean cloth into mixture. Gently blot at spot until all traces of the stain have disappeared.

Then, rinse tie with cold water, and hang it up to dry. If any residual stain remains, repeat the process until the entire stain has been removed.

Tips to Remember

  • Always test any cleaning method on an inconspicuous area of the tie first, to make sure the fabric won't be damaged.
  • Act quickly to treat the stain, because the longer it sits, the harder it will be to remove.
  • If the stain is still not coming out, try using a professional cleaner or dry cleaning solution.
