The first step is to act fast and immediately blot the stain. Taking a soft rag or paper towel and gently press down on the area of the fabric that has been stained. Doing this will help absorb some of spilled wine before it sets permanently.
Next, take a clean, damp sponge and lightly dab the affected area with plain water. Do not rub or scrub the wine stain too vigorously, as this can push the wine further into the fabric, making it more difficult to remove.
Now you can apply a soap solution to stain. To make solution, mix a tablespoon of laundry detergent and a cup of cold water together. Using a clean cloth, dab the solution onto the stained area. Again, avoid rubbing or scrubbing the material.
Once soap solution has been applied, rinse the area with cold water to remove any residual soap or stain. Blot the area until most of the moisture has been absorbed. Allow the fabric to dry before repeating steps 2 - 4 as necessary.
For extra tough stains, you may need to use a professional cleaner. There are several products on market specifically designed to remove wine stains from fabrics like tartan. Follow the instructions on the cleaner package and repeat steps 2 - 4 again if needed.
With some patience and elbow grease, you can easily get your tartan fabric or garments looking like new again. Make sure to act quickly when dealing with a wine stain, and never rub or scrub too hard to avoid pushing the stain further into the fabric.
