Removing Red Wine Stains From Stockings
If you’ve spilled red wine on your stockings, there are several ways to help remove it. Try these easy steps:
- Blot the stain – Use a dry cloth to dab and blot the stain, applying pressure to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. Do not rub or you’ll only spread it further.
- Soak with white wine – Pour some white wine onto the stain, and let it sit for a few minutes. The acidity in wine helps to neutralize the red wine stain in your stocking.
- Launder the item – With the stain still moist, put the stockings in the washing machine using cold water. Use a detergent formulated for delicate fabrics.
- Check for success – Once the stockings are dry, take a look to make sure the stain has been removed. If it hasn’t, repeat the process until you’re happy.
Preventing Further Staining
Accidents will happen - so if you want to prevent further spills on your stockings, we recommend following these steps:
- Choose transparent glasses - Lighter-colored glasses make it easier to see exactly where and how much you’ve filled your glass. Transparent stemless glasses are ideal for this purpose.
- Use coasters – Place your glass on a coaster whenever possible. This prevents spills on your clothing, as well as furniture.
- Be mindful - Pay attention to where you place your glass and, when you set it down, make sure it's secure and won't get bumped.
Homemade Wine Stain Remover
If you don’t have any white wine to hand, you can use a homemade mixture of laundry detergent and baking soda to help remove wine stains from stockings.
- Mix laundry detergent and baking soda – In a bowl, mix two teaspoons of laundry detergent with one teaspoon of baking soda. Stir it well to combine.
- Apply the paste – Spread the paste over the stained area of the stocking. Make sure entire stain is coated.
- Let it sit – Leave paste for about 15-20 minutes, then rinse off in cold water.
- Launder the item – Put the stockings in the washing machine, using cold water and a detergent formulated for delicate fabrics.
- Check for success – After the stockings are dry, take a look to make sure the stain has been removed. If necessary, repeat the process.
