Understanding the Stain

Wine stains are notorious for being difficult to remove. This is because the staining elements in wine consist of four different components: alcoholic ethanol, tannins, pigments, and water. All of these elements penetrate the fabric of your sleepwear and interact with each other to create the stain, making them more difficult to remove than other simple stains.

Gather Your Materials

Before you start cleaning, make sure you have all the necessary materials at hand:

  • Ammonia or white vinegar
  • Liquid detergent
  • White cloth or sponge
  • Baking Soda

Step-by-Step Instructions

If you act quickly, it should be possible to remove the wine stain from your pajamas using the following steps:

  1. Blot up as much of the liquid as you can using a white cloth or sponge.
  2. Apply a light solution of ammonia or white vinegar and water to the stained area.
  3. Rub the solution into the fabric using a white cloth or sponge.
  4. Rinse the stained area with cold water.
  5. Apply liquid detergent to the area and rub it in gently.
  6. Rinse again with cold water.
  7. If the stain remains, create a paste of baking soda and water and rub it on to the area. Rinse with cold water and repeat until stain is gone.

Avoiding Future Stains

It’s always a good idea to pre-treat your sleepwear with a stain repellent, such as Scotchguard, to help protect against future spills. You also want to store your clothes somewhere safe and dry, away from direct sunlight.

Maintaining the Fabric

When washing your sleepwear, make sure to use a laundry detergent that is appropriate for the fabric – consult the label for instructions. Be gentle when laundering. Never use hot water or harsh chemicals, and avoid over-drying in the sun or in dryer.
