Wine can make any occasion special, but if you're wearing silk taffeta, a clumsy friend or guest can ruin the evening pretty quickly with a spilled glass. As soon as the wine is spilled on your silk, use a white cloth to blot the area. Do not rub, as this can spread the stain further. Continue blotting until you have removed as much of the liquid as possible. Then pour cold water over the affected area. This will prevent surounding fibers from absorbing more of the wine stain.
Next, mix together equal parts white vinegar and salt in a bowl. Dip a white cloth in the mixture and dab it directly onto the stain. Leave overnight and be sure to keep the cloth dampened with the mixture.
When morning comes, put the fabric into the washing machine. Use the gentle cycle setting and add a small amount of dishwashing liquid. Run through the rinse cycle once and then check the fabric for any remaining stains. If necessary, repeat the process.
Line dry the fabric and inspect for any remaining stains. If necessary, repeat the steps above until your fabric is clean. Finally, iron the area gently with a warm, dry iron if needed.
Removing a wine stain from silk taffeta can be done with a few simple steps. With a bit of luck, you'll be able to salvage your fabric and have it looking good as new.
