What You'll Need:

  • White vinegar
  • Salt
  • Mild laundry detergent
  • Warm water
  • Soft cloth

Step 1: Blot the Stain

Using a soft cloth, begin to blot the stain with warm water. Be sure to only blot - don't rub wine stain into the fabric.

Step 2: Make a Paste with Salt and Vinegar

Mix equal parts white vinegar and salt to form a paste, making sure to dissolve the salt completely. Then, apply paste directly to the stain and let it sit for approximately 10 minutes.

Step 3: Rinse and Wash

After letting the paste sit for about 10 minutes, rinse the stained area with cold water. Continue to rinse until all the paste is removed. Once the paste has been rinsed away, fill a sink or bowl with lukewarm water and add a few drops of mild laundry detergent. Soak the stained area for 15 minutes, then gently rub the fabric to remove the wine stain. Finally, rinse the area once again with cold water.

Tips and Tricks

  • If the stain is still visible after the initial treatment, you can create a stronger paste by adding more salt to the mixture. Let the paste sit for a few more minutes, then rinse and wash as before.
  • We recommend using white vinegar for this method because it won't discolour the fabric.
  • If the stain is persistent, you may want to consider taking the item to a professional dry cleaner.
