Removing Fresh Stains

If you notice the stain immediately after it happened, act fast:

  • Place a paper towel on the stain and dab gently at it until you've soaked up as much of the liquid as possible.
  • Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a bowl.
  • Dip a clean cloth into the mixture and pat the affected area.
  • Continue dabbing until the stain fades.
  • Rinse with cold water, let dry, and reapply as necessary.

Eradicating Set in Stains

If it's been some time since the stain first occurred, you'll need to take more aggressive action:

  • Mix one tablespoon of liquid dish soap with two cups of cool water.
  • Dampen a soft-bristled brush with the solution and carefully scrub stained area.
  • Do not apply too much pressure or you could damage the surface of the shoe.
  • Rinse with cold water and wipe off any suds that remain.
  • Let dry and repeat if necessary.

Preventing Future Stains

To avoid dealing with a wine stain emergency the next time you step out, spray your shoes with a protective coating such as Scotchguard or similar product. This can help make the material more water-resistant and protect against stains.
