Things You'll Need
- White vinegar
- Salt
- Paper towels
- Sponge or cotton cloth
- Cold water
Step 1: Blot the Stain Immediately
As soon as you notice the red wine stain, act fast by blotting away the excess liquid with paper towels. Don't rub fabric, as this could cause the stain to spread. Continue blotting until all of the wine has been soaked up.
Step 2: Make a Salt and Vinegar Mixture
In a small bowl, mix together equal parts white vinegar and salt. Stir the mixture together until the salt is fully dissolved in the vinegar.
Step 3: Apply the Mixture to the Stain
Using a sponge or a cotton cloth, apply the salt and vinegar mixture directly to the wine stain. Gently rub the mixture over the stain for about one minute. Let it sit for about five minutes before moving on to the next step.
Step 4: Rinse Mixture Out
Once the mixture has had a chance to sit on the stain, use cold water to rinse it out. Gently rub the fabric while rinsing to help lift the stain out.
Step 5: Repeat as Necessary
If the stain is still visible after the first attempt, repeat steps two through four until stain is completely gone.
Step 6: Dry the Pullover
Once the stain is gone, allow the pullover to air-dry. Do not put it in a dryer, as the heat can cause the stain to set and become permanent.
Additional Tips
- Act quickly when treating the stain - the sooner you get started, the easier the stain will be to remove.
- Be gentle when scrubbing the stain - scrubbing too hard can cause the stain to spread.
- Do not use hot water, as this could also cause stain to set.
