Wine spills can occur anywhere, and outdoor furniture is no exception. Old-fashioned remedies like club soda or baking soda can work in certain cases, but there are a host of other methods available to get rid of those unsightly and smelly wine stains:

Using White Vinegar

White vinegar is one of safest and most reliable ingredients to use when it comes to getting rid of wine stains. Start by blotting away any excess liquid with a paper towel, paying attention not to spread stain. Then, mix equal parts white vinegar and lukewarm water and use a clean microfiber cloth to scrub the area in a circular motion. Once all the wine is gone, rinse the spot with water and let dry.

Using Lemon Juice

Another natural alternative is using lemon juice. Start by creating a paste with some salt, then add the lemon juice and stir until it forms a thick paste. Apply the paste to stain and let it sit for 1-2 minutes. Then, take a clean sponge and scrub the area gently before rinsing with water. You may need to repeat the process if the stain is stubborn. Make sure to have gloves on as lemon can be harsh on your skin.

Using Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide can also help with tough wine stains. First, check label of your furniture to find out which type of material it’s made of. If the label says synthetic, use 3% hydrogen peroxide. For natural materials such as wood, use 10% hydrogen peroxide. Dip a clean cloth in a diluted solution of the hydrogen peroxide and apply to the stain, making sure not to saturate the fabric too much. Scrub the area gently and rinse it with lukewarm water. Dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.

Borax and Dish Soap

This method works well for synthetic fabrics. Mix together 1 tablespoon of borax and ¼ cup of liquid dish soap and stir to form a paste. Apply the paste to the stain with a microfiber cloth and let it sit for 5-10 minutes before scrubbing the area with a clean cloth. Rinse with water and dry off with a clean cloth.

Prevention

You can prevent future wine or other liquid stains from happening by applying a coating of Scotchgard or a similar product to your outdoor furniture. This helps to create a protective layer that prevents liquids from seeping into the material. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully and apply the coating in a well-ventilated area. Also, make sure to check the care tag on your outdoor furniture for recommended cleaning methods.
