When dealing with any stain, the first thing to do is to blot the area with a paper towel or clean cloth. Blotting removes excess liquid from the fabric, preventing the spill from spreading further. If stain is larger than a few drops of wine, use a spoon or butter knife to scrape away any solid chunks.
Using a clean cloth and cold water, lightly dampen stained area. Do not rub or scrub the spot as this could cause the stain to spread.
Create a solution of one-part detergent and four parts cold water. Most laundry detergents are suitable for removing wine stains, though some brands may be better than others. Be sure to test the detergent in an inconspicuous area first. Once the detergent solution is ready, gently dab the solution onto the stain.
After allowing the detergent solution to sit for several minutes, rinse the area with cold water. Then, blot the area with a clean cloth to remove excess moisture.
If the stain persists after following the above steps, create a stronger detergent solution by mixing equal parts detergent and ammonia. Apply this solution to the stain, let it sit for several minutes, then rinse. Repeat the process as needed until the stain is gone.
Once the stain is gone, launder the garment as usual. Be sure to read the care instructions on the garment before washing. Avoid using hot water and dryer heat, as this could cause the stain to set permanently.
