Removing the Stain
The key to successfully removing a wine stain is to attack it immediately. White wine will dissolve in water, whereas red wine is more stubborn and may require a few steps.
White Wine Stain
- Remove excess liquid with a cloth or paper towel.
- Soak up remaining moisture with baking soda, salt, or cornstarch to draw out the liquid.
- Mix equal parts water and white vinegar and apply it directly to the stain.
- Allow mixture to sit for 5-10 minutes before rinsing with a damp cloth.
- If there is still a trace of the stain, scrub gently with a soft-bristled brush using a mild detergent.
Red Wine Stain
- Remove excess liquid from the shoe by dabbing it with a cloth or paper towel.
- Sprinkle a generous amount of salt on the stain to absorb the remaining liquid.
- Mix equal parts laundry detergent and white vinegar and apply it directly to the stain.
- Let the mixture sit on the stain for 5-10 minutes before rinsing with a damp cloth.
- If the stain is still visible, rub the area gently with a soft-bristled brush and a mild detergent.
Preventing Future Stains
To prevent future wine stains, always keep your shoes clean. Wipe them down after every use and consider investing in a protective spray or sealant that will help repel liquids.
