When it comes to removing wine stains from macramé, time is of the essence. The longer the stain sets in, the harder it will be to remove. If you notice the wine spill right away, act fast—the sooner you start treating macramé, the better chance you have at saving it.

First, absorb as much of the wine as possible with a paper towel or cloth. Blot the affected area until nearly all the liquid has been removed. Make sure to be gentle, so as not to damage the delicate material.

Now it’s time to break out the cleaning solution. To make a natural cleaning solution, combine 1 part vinegar, 2 parts warm water, and 3-4 drops of a gentle dish detergent, like Dawn. Dip a clean cloth into mixture and gently dab at the stain until all liquid is removed. Do not scrub—you risk damaging fibers.

Once the stain is gone, rinse the macramé with a damp cloth. If any of the cleaning solution remains on the fabric, gently blot away with a warm, damp cloth. Do not use hot water, as it may cause the colors to bleed.

Laying the macramé flat, allow it to air dry completely. Once dry, run a piece of fine sandpaper over the spot where the stain was. This will help give the area added texture and erase any remaining spot.

Finally, if stain was large and/or stubborn, you may have to repeat the process several times over until the stain is completely gone. With patience and persistence, you’ll be able to get rid of the wine stain and restore your macramé to its former glory.
