When you first see the stain, your best bet is to grab a kitchen towel or some paper towels and press it gently against the fabric. This will absorb as much liquid as possible, making stain much easier to remove. After pressing the towel onto the fabric, move away from the stain, and quickly blot it with a cloth dampened with water.
Once you’ve blotched away as much of the liquid as you can, it’s time to make a paste of borax powder, white vinegar, and water. Mix these ingredients until they form a paste and apply it directly onto the stain; let it sit for 30 to 40 minutes, then rinse it off with lukewarm water.
If all goes well, stubborn stain will be gone in no time. However, if the stain persists, it’s best to repeat the steps above, but this time using a little bit of detergent instead of a borax paste.
It’s not uncommon for wine stains to set into the fabric, and become quite a tricky task to remove. If you’re dealing with an old or set-in wine stain, there are several things you can try.
First, use a bristle brush to rub the fabric in circular motions—this will help lift stain from fabric. Once you’re finished, prepare a solution of equal parts vinegar and warm water, and soak fabric for 45 minutes. Finally, rinse the fabric with cold water and launder it with a gentle soap.
If the stain still won’t budge, you can try a commercial stain remover, such as carbonated water, rubbing alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide. Test a small spot first, and if the fabric appears to not be stained, go ahead and apply it to the entire stain. Let the fabric sit for a good 15 minutes, then rinse it off and put it in the washing machine.
