When it comes to cleaning wine stains off Hermes leather goods, it is best to take preventative measures to stop them from happening in the first place. This can include investing in spill-resistant sprays or protective cases to help minimize chance of a disaster.

If you do encounter a stain, the type of leather will determine cleaning technique you need to use. Depending on the type of leather, the amount of absorption and amount of wetness can vary from material to material. For example, calfskin leather is often softer and more prone to absorbing spilled wine.

Cleaning techniques for different types of Leather

Calfskin Leather

For calfskin leather, sparingly dab the stain with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not scrub stain, as this could damage the leather. With a soft cloth, gently blot the stain until it starts to come off. Once it has faded slightly, dry it thoroughly with microfiber cloths. Wipe with a dry cloth and apply leather conditioner afterwards.

Saffiano Leather

Saffiano leather is much more durable and does not require as much care as calfskin leather. To clean it, start by lightly brushing off any excess liquid with a soft brush and then dab at it with a damp cloth. Leave it to dry and if necessary, wipe down with leather cleaner. Once dry, finish with a leather conditioner.

Nubuck Leather

Nubuck leather is a type of brushed-finish leather that looks velvet-like and is easily prone to staining. To remove wine stains from this type of leather, use an upholstery vacuum to suck up the excess liquid. Then, use a suede brush to brush off the stain. If there is still a mark left behind, try using a leather cleaner to spot clean it.

Other Tips

While the above methods may help with removing wine stains, there are some other tips to consider when it comes to cleaning Hermes. For example, avoid using water on this type of leather, as it can cause it to become soggy and prone to discoloration. Additionally, always test out cleaning methods in small, inconspicuous areas before using them on the main item, as some cleaning products may discolor the leather.
