Before removing a wine stain from your down jacket, make sure you know what type of fabric the jacket is made from. This will help you choose right cleaning solution and technique.

Step One: Blot the Stain Immediately

As soon as the stain happens, reach for a clean cloth or paper towel to gently blot the stain. Start at the center and work your way outwards. Don't scrub - this can push the stain further into the fabric.

Step Two: Treat the Stain

You'll need to create a cleaning solution appropriate for the fabric the down jacket is made from. For synthetic fabrics such as nylon, polyester, or acrylic, mix together one teaspoon of mild detergent with one cup of cold water. Dip a clean cloth in this solution and dab the stain until gone.

For natural fabrics such as cotton and wool, try using a mixture of one tablespoon of white vinegar and two cups of cool water. Use a cloth dipped in the solution and dab at the stain until gone.

Step Three: Rinse and Dry

After treating the stain, rinse the jacket with cool water. Then lay the jacket flat to dry. Once the jacket is completely dry, fluff up the down feathers with your hands.
