Step 1: Blot the Stain

As soon as possible after the spill occurs, grab a clean cloth or paper towel and begin gently blotting the stain. Don't rub or press too hard, as this can cause the wine to penetrate deeper into the material. The goal here is to lift as much of the liquid away from the fabric as possible.

Step 2: Apply a Cleaning Solution

Once you've soaked up as much of the liquid as you can, grab a spray bottle and make up a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and cold water. Spray the area lightly, being sure not to saturate the fabric, and then gently dab at the stain with another clean cloth.

Step 3: Rinse and Launder

Once the stain has been removed, rinse the area thoroughly with cold water. Then, launder item according to the manufacturer's directions. Be sure to use an oxygen bleach product instead of a chlorine bleach. An enzyme pre-treatment may also be necessary, so always follow the clothing care instructions provided.

A Final Word of Caution

If the stain does not come out after first try, don't keep trying different methods. This could end up causing more harm than good. Instead, take the item to a professional cleaner who has the expertise and specialized products needed to get the job done.
