Spilling a glass of wine at a special occasion or gathering can be embarrassing and is sure to ruin a beautiful piece of clothing. Whether it’s a beloved dress, a crisp white collared shirt, or a cotton gingham blouse, a red wine stain is a stubborn reminder of the evening.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Ice cubes
  • White distilled vinegar
  • Dish washing detergent
  • Cleaning cloth

Step 1: Blot & Freeze Stain

The first step in removing a red wine stain is to blot away as much of liquid as possible. Place a few ice cubes on the stained area and let them sit for 10-15 minutes. This will help break up the stain and make it easier to remove.

Step 2: Apply Vinegar

After the ice has been on stain for a few minutes, remove the cubes and use a cloth soaked in white distilled vinegar to gently dab the stain. Continue to dab until the stain starts to fade. The acidity in vinegar will help lift stain.

Step 3: Use Detergent and Water

Once you’ve removed as much of the stain as possible using the vinegar, mix a solution of two tablespoons of dish washing detergent and two cups of cold water. Immerse the clothing in the solution and let it soak for 15-20 minutes. After soaking, rinse with cold water then launder as usual.

That’s it!

And just like that, your gingham fabric is wine stain free! With a few simple supplies and a bit of elbow grease, you can keep your cotton clothing looking colorful and vibrant.
