Step 1: Dilution is Key
Start by diluting stain as quickly as possible. For every one part water, mix one part white vinegar or club soda together in a container. Gently pour solution onto the stain and let it sit for 5 minutes. Don’t rub or scrub the area as this will spread the stain instead of removing it.
Step 2: Soak It
In a separate bowl, create a cleaning solution of dish soap detergent and warm water. Let the stained portion soak in the soapy water for up to 15 minutes to help loosen up the stain.
Step 3: Scrub
Once the shirt has soaked, take it out and rinse away as much of the solution as possible. Next, take a soft bristled toothbrush or nylon-bristled brush (like those used for dishes) and gently scrub the stain away. Don’t scrub too hard or you may damage the fabric.
Step 4: Wash
After stain has been scrubbed away, launder the shirt using warm water with a teaspoon of color safe bleach, if necessary. Hang the shirt to dry and you’re all done!
Prevention is the Best Medicine
To prevent this accident from happening again in the future, try treating your cotton chambray shirt with a prewash stain remover prior to its first wear. This helps to repel water, oil and other substances, which can help reduce chance of staining fabrics.
