Your first instinct might be to reach for the nearest cleaning product (and with cotton canvas, that's a no-no). Instead, you should use a gentle fabric cleaner to gently lift the stain away without ruining the fabric. Here are a few steps you can take to make sure your cotton canvas looks as good as new.

  • Blot the area. Using a clean cloth, gently blot the stain to remove any excess red wine. Be sure to use light pressure while doing this so as not to spread or rub the stain.
  • Soak the fabric. Fill a sink or basin with warm water and a teaspoon of laundry detergent. Submerge the stained area fully and allow it to soak for at least 30 minutes.
  • Rinse the fabric. Once the fabric is fully soaked, rinse the stained area with warm water until all laundry detergent has been removed. Be sure to avoid rubbing or scrubbing fabric, as this can cause stain to set further.
  • Blot again. To begin drying the fabric, use a clean cloth to blot area. Once again, use light pressure to ensure that the stain does not spread.
  • Air-dry. Hang fabric up to air-dry, preferably in a well-ventilated area. Avoid using a clothes dryer, as this can cause stain to set further. If the stain does not come out after air-drying, repeat the above steps until desired results are achieved.

There you have it! With a little bit of effort and patience, you can rid your favorite cotton canvas of red wine stains and restore it to its former glory. Now you can enjoy your favorite glass of vino in peace.
