When it comes to cleaning red wine stains from cotton fabrics, the most important thing is to act fast. The longer the stain has to set, the more likely it will become permanent. As soon as you notice the spill, blot up the excess liquid with a clean cloth.
Now that you've blotted up the excess liquid, it's time to start tackling the stain itself. To do this, mix a solution of equal parts cold water, white vinegar, and liquid dish detergent. Dip a clean, soft clean cloth in the mixture and gently press it against stain. Don't rub or scrub the stain, as this could cause stain to spread or become even harder to remove. Allow the mixture to sit for two to three minutes before rinsing with cold water.
Once you've rinsed the stain, it's time to move onto next step in the cleaning process. Make a baking soda paste by combining two tablespoons of baking soda with half a teaspoon of water. Gently rub the paste onto the stain using a soft-bristled brush. Allow the paste to sit until it has dried completely, then brush off the residue.
Once you've removed the stain and rinsed off all of cleaning agents, you can proceed to the final step. To make sure the stain has been completely removed, simply place the fabric item in the washing machine with its usual detergent. Use the cold water setting, and do not add any bleach or other fabric softeners.
After washing, check the item for any remaining stains before drying. If the stain is gone, you can go ahead and dry the item as normal. If not, simply repeat the process until the stain disappears.
