The first step is to act fast! Red wine contains dyes that can set into fabric if left to sit for too long. Blot excess liquid with a cloth and rinse the stain with cold water. Do not scrub or rub the fabric; this can spread the stain further and make it more difficult to remove.

If the stain persists, it’s time to break out the cleaning products. Fortunately, there are many household items you can use to tackle the stubborn red wine stain.

  • White vinegar: Use a one-to-one solution of white vinegar and water. Make sure to saturate stained area and let sit for about 15 minutes before blotting up the excess.
  • Dish soap: Prepare a mixture of Dawn dish detergent and warm water. Rub the mixture directly onto the stain with your fingertips. Let sit for 10 minutes and then blot up excess.
  • Rubbing alcohol: Dampen a cloth with rubbing alcohol and dab directly onto the stain. Blot and repeat as needed.

Once you’ve tackled the stain, it’s essential to launder the coat according to care instructions. Some red wine stains can be difficult to remove, and it may take several rounds of the above steps to get your coat looking like new again.
