One of the most common causes of a large stain on a cardigan is spilled wine. Whether it is an accidental stain or one that happened while sipping your favorite merlot, the stain can be an eyesore. Fortunately, removing the wine stain isn't as hard as you think.

Steps To Clean A Wine Stain On Cardigan

  1. The first step is to blot up any excess liquid with a paper towel. Make sure not to scrub or rub the stain, as this will only cause the stain to set deeper into the fabric.
  2. The next step is to make a cleaning solution. Combine one cup of cold water and two tablespoons of dish detergent and mix until the detergent is dissolved. Do not use hot water as this can cause the stain to set more deeply into fabric.
  3. Once the solution is prepared, dip a white cloth in it and then wring it out so that it is damp but not dripping. Gently dab the cloth on the stain, repeating as necessary.
  4. If the stain still remains, you can try this method: Mix one teaspoon of ammonia and one cup of cold water and use a white cloth to apply the mixture to the stain. Leave the mixture on the stain for a few minutes, then rinse with cool water.
  5. Allow the cardigan to air dry completely away from direct sunlight.
  6. Finally, if the stain persists, take your cardigan to dry cleaner.

Tips For Removing Wine Stains From Cardigan

  • Always test the cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the cardigan before applying it to the stain.
  • Do not use hot water as this can cause the stain to set more deeply into the fabric.
  • Blot the stain, don’t rub it, as rubbing can make the stain worse.
  • Do not put the cardigan in dryer, as the heat could set the stain.
