If you've just had a red wine spill, you'll want to act quickly to avoid the stain setting in permanently. Try blotting the area with a paper towel to absorb some of liquid, then mix one part white vinegar and two parts cold water in a spray bottle. Apply solution directly to the stain, but don't saturate it, or it could spread or cause water damage. Finally, dab the area with a damp washcloth to lift the remaining stain.
If the stain has already dried, scrape off as much of the stain as you can with a dull knife, then apply salt liberally to the stained area and gently rub it into the fabric. The salt will act as an abrasive and get rid of built-up stain. Brush away any remaining salt residue and apply the vinegar and water solution to the stain, then follow up with a damp washcloth.
If the stain persists, you can try soaking the fabric in lukewarm water before laundering the item with mild detergent. The key when cleaning delicate fabrics is to be extra gentle and take care not to push stain further into fibers.
Finally, always do an inconspicuous spot test before applying any cleaning solutions to fabrics.
