Battenberg lace is an intricate, ornamental linen fabric typically used for decorating tablecloths, curtains, and home accessories. Soft yet durable, it provides fine detail in needlework and can last for many years – unless it is stained with something like red wine.
As soon as possible after the accident, using paper towels or a clean cloth, blot up as much as you can of spill. Do not rub or scrub, as this will only spread the stain further and damage the fibers of the fabric.
To treat the stain, start by making a paste of cornstarch and white vinegar. You will want to combine 1 teaspoon of the vinegar with 3 teaspoons of the cornstarch until a paste forms. Spread the paste over the stain area and leave it on for several hours. In some cases, you may need to leave it overnight for the best results.
Once the paste has had time to work its magic, use a soft brush to brush away the powder residue. If needed, you can also vacuum area gently to get rid of any remaining powder.
As a final step, you should launder fabric as usual. If the stain remains, repeat the process. When all else fails, take your lacy item to a professional cleaner for help.
By following these simple steps, you can safely remove that pesky wine stain from your Battenberg lace without damaging the precious fabric.
