The key to getting red wine out of any fabric is taking immediate action. As soon as you notice the stain, dab away the excess with a paper towel or a damp cloth – being careful to not rub the stain further into the fabric. Once you’ve blotted away the excess, it’s time to prepare the area for treatment.
If stain is still wet, sprinkle some salt onto it. This will help absorb the remaining liquid while you continue to treat it. To keep stain from setting, pour white vinegar onto affected area. You can also mix equal parts of water and vinegar in a spray bottle and spritz it onto fabric as you please.
Once you’ve treated the stain with vinegar, soak the item in cold water for at least 15 minutes. If the fabric allows it, add some detergent to water and let it soak for an additional 15 minutes.
After soaking the item, start scrubbing the stained area gently with a brush. Make sure to use a light hand, as harsh scrubbing can cause damage to the fabric. If stain persists, mix a tablespoon of ammonia with some cold water and apply this mixture to the stained area. Thoroughly rinse garment afterwards, and then launder it normally in the washing machine.
