Step 1: Blot it Up Immediately

The first step to tackling any wine stain is to blot up as much of spill as you can. Begin by removing any excess liquid with a paper towel or clean cloth, being sure to dab instead of rub the fabric so as not to spread stain further. Washable fabrics such as clothes can then be rinsed with cold water again using a damp cloth.

Step 2: Apply a Stain Remover

Once you have blotted the stained area, the next step is to apply a stain remover directly to spill. For colored fabrics, use a commercial stain remover specifically designed for colored materials. For white or light-colored fabrics, you can mix equal parts of white vinegar and warm water, then apply this to the affected area.

Step 3: Rinse and Launder as Normal

After treating the material with a stain remover, it’s important to rinse the fabric again. If the stain is gone, machine wash the item as normal. For items that are dry-clean only, take it to cleaners as soon as possible. Once item has been laundered, check to make sure the stain has been completely removed.

Step 4: Repeat if Necessary

If the stain persists after laundering, repeat steps two and three before giving up! With a little persistence and the right technique, you can get rid of that pesky red wine stain.
