What You'll Need

  • Soap, preferably a laundry detergent
  • A bucket
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Cold water
  • A soft-bristled brush
  • Cream of tartar
  • A clean white cloth

Step 1: Soak Garment

Fill a large bucket or your sink with cold water and add a small amount of laundry detergent. Place the garment in the bucket and allow it to soak for 20 minutes. This will help loosen the stain molecules so they can be more easily removed.

Step 2: Apply a Stain Remover

Create a paste out of distilled white vinegar and cream of tartar. Gently rub the paste onto the stained area with a soft-bristled brush. Allow the paste to sit on the stain for up to 30 minutes.

Step 3: Rinse the Garment

Remove the paste with a clean white cloth. Rinse the garment in cold water until all residue is removed. Make sure to check for any remaining stains before moving on to next step.

Step 4: Wring and Hang Dry

Gently wring the garment to remove excess water and hang to dry in a well-ventilated area. Once the garment is completely dry, check for any remaining stains. If there are any, repeat Steps 2 and 3 until the stains are completely gone.

Tips for Success

  • Always test any cleaning solutions on a hidden area of the garment first to make sure no damage occurs.
  • Don't rub the stain; this could cause stain to spread further.
  • Do not use hot water as this could set the stain.
  • If the stain remains, try repeating Steps 2 and 3 before giving up.
