Step 1: Blot the Stains Dry

The first step to removing any type of stain from an area rug is to blot it dry. Start by taking a damp cloth and gently pressing it against the stained area to blot it dry. Make sure to move cloth in a circular motion to ensure that the stain is being removed as much as possible.

Step 2: Pre-Treat the Stain

Once the area has been blotted dry, it’s time to pre-treat stain. To do this, mix together a solution of one part water and one part white vinegar. Then, use a spray bottle to spritz the solution onto the stained area. Let the solution sit on the stain for 10 minutes before blotting it up with a clean cloth.

Step 3: Use Laundry Detergent

Once the pre-treatment solution has been blotted up, apply some laundry detergent directly to the stained area. Be sure to use a gentle detergent that is specifically designed for area rugs. Add a few drops of water to the detergent and let it sit for 10 minutes before blotting up the excess with a cloth.

Step 4: Rinse Rug

Finally, rinse area rug thoroughly with clean water. Use a clean cloth or a sponge to help remove any remaining detergent residue. Once the rug is clean, hang it up to dry in a well-ventilated area.
