Removing White Wine Stains: Step by Step

  1. Blot up as much of the stain as possible, using a clean cloth or paper towels.
  2. Create a paste of equal parts powdered laundry detergent and white vinegar. Once mixed, apply the paste directly onto the stained area.
  3. Let the paste sit for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Rinse the paste away with warm water.
  5. Pre-treat with a liquid laundry detergent before laundering to help remove any remaining wine stains.
  6. If the stain has not been removed entirely, repeat the process until it is gone.

Additional Tips and Tricks

  • Dry Cleaning: Dry cleaning is the safest route if you are concerned about damaging the fabric by washing. Before dry cleaning any wool garment, contact the dry cleaners in order to check the care instructions.
  • Salt: An effective method for removing old or stubborn stains is to make a thick paste using salt and white vinegar. Apply the mixture onto the stained area, allow it to sit for 30 minutes and rinse away with lukewarm water.
  • White Distilled Vinegar: A solution of one part vinegar and two parts lukewarm water can be used as an alternative to the detergent/vinegar paste. Soak the garment in the solution for 15-20 minutes and rinse away with cool water before laundering.

Be Careful!

When treating any wool clothing item, always be sure to check the manufacturer’s care labels first. If you are unsure about the product’s specific needs, contact a professional cleaner or the product’s manufacturer.
