Removing the Stains

With white wine, it's best to take the stain out immediately after the spill by blotting it with a paper towel or a clean cloth. Blot the stain from the outside in, pushing the liquid into the center of stain and away from the edges. Do not rub or scrub the fabric to avoid damaging the fibers.

Once the bulk of the stain is gone, you can use a few solutions to help break down and remove the remaining red wine stains, including:

  • Dish soap and cold water - Mix one teaspoon of dish soap with two cups of cold water, then gently dab the mix onto stain with a clean cloth. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with cold water and repeat if necessary.
  • Baking soda and water - Make a paste with baking soda and water, then apply the paste directly to the stain. Let it set for 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
  • White vinegar - Dab some white vinegar directly onto stain with a clean cloth and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse with cold water and repeat if necessary.

Drying the Tie

After you've removed the stain and rinsed the area with cold water, it is important to hang the tie up in indirect sunlight so it can fully dry. Never place the tie in the dryer or in direct sunlight, as this could cause fabric to shrink or fade.
