White wine spills can be tricky to clean, but it is far from impossible. Before you break out the cleaning supplies, there are a few steps you should follow to make sure your shearling looks as good as new.

Step 1: Blot Out the Stain

The first step after any kind of stain is to blot out as much of the wine as possible. Use a clean cloth or napkin to do this, and then press lightly and evenly across the affected area. Do not rub too hard, which can spread the stain.

Step 2: Pre-Treat the Stain

Now that you've blotted up as much of the wine as you can, it's time to pre-treat the stain. Start by mixing one part dishwashing liquid with four parts warm water, and then apply the mixture directly to the stain. Use a white cloth to gently dab at the area and then let it sit for five minutes. If the stain has been recently spilled, this step should be all you need.

Step 3: Wash with Mild Detergent

For tougher stains, you may need to do a more thorough wash with a mild detergent. Make sure that you use a detergent that is designed for delicate fabrics and does not contain harsh chemicals. Wash the garment in cold water and air dry flat. After washing, check the garment for any remaining stains, and repeat the process if necessary.

Step 4: Apply Spot Cleaner

If you still have some stubborn stains left after washing, you may need to apply a spot cleaner. Make sure you spot test the cleaner on an inconspicuous area of the garment before applying it to the stain. Once you have tested it and found it safe, apply the cleaner to the stain and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing it off.

Extra Tips for Removing White Wine Stains from Shearling

  • Be sure to act swiftly when dealing with white wine stains. The sooner you start treating it, the better your chances of cleaning it.
  • If the stain has set in, you may need to repeat the steps several times until it is completely gone.
  • If the stain still won't budge, try using a vinegar and baking soda solution. Mix 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and ½ teaspoon of baking soda together, and then apply the mixture to the stained area. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then rinse it off.
