Gathering Supplies

You will need:

  • Cold water
  • Dish detergent or laundry detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
  • Baking soda
  • Sponges

Instructions

If you act quickly enough, you may be able to keep white wine from staining your raincoat altogether. Immediately rinse the stain with cold water for up to 5 minutes, making sure to rinse from the inside of garment as well.

If stain remains, start by applying a dish or laundry detergent directly on top of it. Rub the detergent into the stain with a damp sponge, then soak the garment in cold water for about 30 minutes. Then, rinse the garment with cold water again.

If the stain is still visible, create a cleaning solution using 1 teaspoon of white vinegar, 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide, and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Mix until the baking soda is completely dissolved, then apply the solution onto stain. Leave it there for 10 minutes, then rinse with cold water.

After each step, inspect the stain to see if it has faded. If not, repeat steps until you are satisfied with the results. You may also want to try using a laundry pre-treatment spray or stain remover.

Tips and Warnings

  • Ensure that the cleaning solutions are used separately, and never mix them together.
  • Make sure that you use cold water and not hot water.
  • Do not put the garment in the dryer until the stain is completely gone.
  • Always test any cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area before applying to the stain itself.
