We’ve all been there - you’re having a great time sipping white wine at a party and, oops!, a stray drop of wine lands on your beautiful kimono. You don’t have to fret, though - with a few simple steps and the right supplies, you can get that stain out before it sets in.

Step 1: Blot Stain

The first step is to blot away as much of the excess wine as possible. Use a clean cloth or paper towel to press onto the stain, lifting up to move onto a new area as it absorbs liquid. Do not scrub or rub back and forth - this could damage the fibers of your kimono and make the stain more difficult to remove.

Step 2: Pretreat the Stain

Mix one tablespoon of mild detergent, like dish soap, with two cups of warm water. Test the solution on a hidden area of fabric to make sure it won’t damage the fibers. Then gently apply the solution to the stained area with a soft cloth or sponge. Let the mixture sit for up to 10 minutes.

Step 3: Rinse the Stain

Rinse the stain with cold water or an equal parts mix of water and white vinegar. Pat dry with a clean cloth and repeat until the stain has lightened.

Step 4: Apply OxiClean

Make a paste with OxiClean powder and water, then thoroughly spread it onto the stain. Allow the paste to sit for 15-20 minutes and then gently rinse away with cold water.

Step 5: Wash & Dry

If necessary, repeat steps two to four until the stain has been removed. Then machine-wash the kimono on a delicate cycle using cold water. Make sure to air dry garment to avoid any shrinkage or changes in color.

Taking Care

Preventative measures are key to keeping your kimono looking its best. When wearing your kimono, try to keep beverages away from you as much as possible to avoid any spills or stains. If any do occur, act fast to remove the stain as soon as possible.
