Step 1: Blot Don't Rub

The first step of stain removal is to break up and absorb excess liquid. Blot the spill with a clean, white absorbent cloth to soak up as much moisture as possible. Try to avoid scrubbing or rubbing the stain – this will only push the liquid further into the fibers of the fabric.

Step 2: Apply Water and Detergent

Once you’ve blotted away most of moisture from the shirt, apply a mixture of water and laundry detergent directly onto the stain. Gently massage the mixture into the fabric, working it in for about one minute.

Step 3: Rinse the Stain

Once you’ve worked the detergent into the fabric, rinse shirt with cold water. This will help to remove any remaining detergent residue and break down the stain.

Step 4: Soak the Stain

For stubborn or dried stains, create a mixture of one teaspoon of white vinegar and one cup of warm water and pour it over the stained area. Allow the shirt to soak for another 30 minutes in the mixture.

Step 5: Launder the Shirt

Once you’ve finished soaking shirt, it’s time to throw it in the washing machine. Wash the garment according to the instructions on the care label; if possible, use a cold wash cycle. When the cycle is complete, check the stain to see if any residue remains. If so, repeat steps one through four.
