Here's How to Carefully Clean White Wine Stains from Cashmere

Things You'll Need

  • Club soda
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • White vinegar
  • Dry cloth
  • Dry-cleaning solvent

Step 1: Blot the Stain with a Dry Cloth

First, take a dry cloth and gently blot the stain. Do not rub it — this can cause the stain to spread out and become more difficult to remove. Once you’ve blotted the stain, don’t rinse the garment yet — move on to step two.

Step 2: Use Club Soda to Clean Stain

Next, use club soda to clean the stain. Pour a generous amount of soda on the stain, then lightly dab at spot with a clean cloth. Keep dabbing until you’ve gotten all of the excess liquid up.

Step 3: Wash the Fabric

Now, it’s time to wash the cashmere fabric. Fill a deep basin with lukewarm water, then add a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Place fabric in the basin and let it soak for 15 minutes, then rinse it off with cold water. Blot the fabric with a dry cloth to remove any extra moisture.

Step 4: Remove Residue with Vinegar

Finally, it’s time to remove any remaining residue. Mix one part white vinegar with two parts water and pour the solution onto the stain. Gently dab the fabric with a cloth to remove the residual liquid. Then, let garment air dry — do not put it in dryer.

Tips & Warnings

If stain does not come out after following the above steps, you may need to use a dry-cleaning solvent. However, use this with caution — always read instructions before using a solvent, and never use it on delicate fabrics.
