Before starting any stain removal process, you’ll want to assess the type of fabric the ball gown is made out of. Knowing whether it’s wool, silk, or another fabric will help you figure out what cleaning method to use.
Use a clean cloth or paper towel to gently blot up as much wine as possible. Make sure not to rub the material too hard, as that can cause further damage to the fabric.
Dissolve a tablespoon of salt in half a cup of lukewarm water. Once the salt is completely dissolved, apply it to stained area. The salt helps absorb the liquid and remove some of the staining.
Using a mild laundry detergent or dish soap, rub a small amount into the stain. You can use a soft-bristled brush for this step. Leave the solution on for about 15 minutes, then rinse with cold water.
Use a spray bottle to spray OxiClean MaxForce directly on the stain. Rub solution in using a soft-bristled brush. Let the solution sit for at least 10 minutes before washing.
Set the washing machine for a delicate cycle, and use cold water only. Line dry the garment to avoid heat damage.
Before drying the garment, test the stained area to make sure the stain is no longer visible. If stain has lightened but not completely disappeared, repeat steps four to seven until it is gone.
If stain is gone, you can proceed to the drying step. Typically, wool and silk garments should be laid flat to dry. For other fabrics, line drying is usually best.
Removing white wine stains from a ball gown doesn’t have to be a nightmare. By following these eight simple steps, you can quickly and easily get the stain out without damaging the fabric.
