The first step to cleaning vomit stains from traditional dress is to remove any solid bits. You can do this by blotting stain carefully with a paper towel and picking out or scraping away any larger solids.

Once you’ve removed any solids, it’s time to tackle the liquid portion of the stain. To do this, start by dabbing the area with a damp cloth. Then you’ll want to mix a solution of warm water and non-phosphate detergent, such as dish soap. Dab this mixture onto the stain and let it sit for about two or three minutes before rinsing the area with lukewarm water.

If the stain is still present, you’ll need to take some extra steps. Start by repeating steps one and two. Once you’ve done this, you can use a commercial stain remover or a mixture of 1/3 white vinegar, 1/3 rubbing alcohol, 1/3 cold water. Dab this mixture onto the stain and let it sit for about five minutes before wiping it off with a clean cloth.

For tough, dried on vomit stains, you may need to repeat steps two through four several times until stain is gone. However, if the stain won’t budge, it’s best to call a professional cleaner and have them take over.

Remember, when dealing with vomit stains, it’s important to act quickly. The sooner you take a step to remove it, the better the result.
