Steps to Remove Vomit Stains

  1. If the vomit is still wet, blot it with a paper towel. Be careful not to spread the stain to decrease its size.
  2. Dilute the area with cold water and blot with a paper towel.
  3. Use laundry detergent or stain remover on the affected area.
  4. Rinse area lightly with cold water and blot with a paper towel.
  5. Wash shirt in the hottest temperature setting recommended for fabric.

Additional Tips

  • To improve the success of your cleaning efforts, pre-treat affected area with laundry detergent before washing.
  • Never use hot water on the stain, as this will set vomit into the fabric.
  • Run the shirt through the wash cycle twice to further reduce the appearance of the stain.

What if the Stain Remains?

If stain persists, you may need to use a stronger cleaning agent such as chlorine bleach. Use the bleach according to the instructions on the product and the instructions for washing the fabric. If you are using a white shirt, bleach may be the only product that works.

Can I Put the Shirt in the Dryer?

You should not put a shirt with a vomit stain in the dryer until you are sure the stain is gone. If the stain remains, it will likely be set into fabric by the heat of the dryer.
