The first step in cleaning any stain is to remove as much of substance as possible before attempting to clean it. Take a spoon or butter knife, and carefully scrape away the excess vomit from the scarf. Be careful not to press too hard; the fabric may be fragile and you don’t want to create damage.
Clothing detergent is your best bet for pre-treating vomit stains on a scarf. Apply a small spot of detergent directly to the stain, then gently rub it into the fabric with your fingers. Let the detergent penetrate the fabric for 10-15 minutes.
Wash the scarf in cold water with a color-safe detergent. Do not use chlorine bleach, as this could cause yellowing or fading. Wash on the gentle cycle and let the machine finish running its cycle before drying.
For most scarves, air drying is best. Lay the wet scarf on a flat surface such as an ironing board or a towel. Allow it to air dry completely. Alternatively, you can also hang scarf up to dry.
Once the scarf is dry, inspect it for any remaining stains. If there are any, repeat steps 2-4 until the stain is removed. For particularly stubborn stains, spot-clean the area with a mild stain remover.
