Before You Begin

  • Gather supplies: paper towels, laundry detergent, white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, rubber gloves, scrubbing brush, and a basin.
  • Check the label on your poncho for specific care instructions.
  • Test a small area of your garment before applying any cleaning solution. This will ensure that the fabric won’t be damaged by the cleaning process.

Step 1: Soak the Stained Area in Cold Water

Submerge the stained area in a bowl of cold water as soon as possible. Let it soak in the water for up to 30 minutes, but do not leave it in for more than an hour. This will help to loosen the vomit from the fabric fibers and make it easier to remove.

Step 2: Pre-Treat with Detergent and White Vinegar

Mix one tablespoon of liquid laundry detergent with two tablespoons of white vinegar in a bowl. Gently dab the mixture onto the stained area and let it sit for about 10 minutes. This combination helps to break down vomit proteins and make it easier to remove.

Step 3: Scrub the Stain with Baking Soda

Sprinkle baking soda directly on stained area and use a scrubbing brush to gently scrub the fabric fibers. This will help to further loosen vomit particles and make them easier to remove.

Step 4: Rinse with Hydrogen Peroxide

Mix one part hydrogen peroxide with four parts water in a bowl. Use a cloth or sponge to apply the solution to the stained area and let it sit for 10 minutes. The hydrogen peroxide helps to further break down the vomit proteins and lift the stain from the fabric.

Step 5: Rinse and Wash with Detergent

Rinse the affected area with cold water. Then, add detergent to a basin of warm water and submerge the poncho. Let it soak for at least 15 minutes before washing it in the washing machine. Hang the poncho to dry.
