Unfortunately, vomit stains on outerwear – such as coats, hats, and scarves – are all too common, especially for parents with young children. Though these stains can be difficult to remove completely, there are steps you can take to prevent or minimize the damage.

Step 1: Treat the Stain Immediately

If possible, it's best to treat stain as soon as possible after it occurs. Blot up any excess vomit with a paper towel or cloth, being careful not to spread the stain further. Then, use a pre-treatment spray designed for removing stains, or mix a solution of water and detergent to apply directly to the stain.

Step 2: Allow the Pre-Treatment to Work

Allow your pre-treatment solution to sit on the stain for 15 to 20 minutes before laundering. If the stain is particularly stubborn, you may want to let the pre-treatment sit overnight.

Step 3: Launder as Usual

Once you have pre-treated the stain, put the item in the washer and launder according to the care instructions. You may want to use an extra-strength or heavy-duty cycle for extra cleaning power. Use the hottest water possible, based on the fabric content, to ensure the best chance of success.

Step 4: Attending to Stubborn Stains

In some cases, despite your best efforts, the stain may still remain. In this case, try applying an oxygen-based cleaner, such as OxiClean, directly to the stain. Follow the instructions on the label carefully, and then launder as usual.

Conclusion

Removing vomit stains from outerwear doesn't have to be a challenging task. With a bit of patience, right products, and the right techniques, you can take care of problem quickly and easily.
