Step 1: Sponge the Vomit

Immediately after a vomiting incident, try to sponge up as much of the vomit as possible, using a damp cloth or paper towels. If the fabric is delicate, use a very gentle patting motion instead of rubbing.

Step 2: Pre-Treat with a Stain Remover

Once you’ve sponged up as much of vomit as you can, pre-treat affected area with a stain remover or detergent. Spray the area with the cleaning solution and let it sit for a few minutes before continuing.

Step 3: Soak the Jacket in Hot Water

Fill a basin with hot water and add laundry detergent to make a thick sudsy solution. Fully submerge the stained portion of the jacket in the sudsy water, pushing the fabric down so that it is completely soaked. Let it soak for an hour or two.

Step 4: Rinse and Pat Dry

Carefully remove the jacket from the sudsy solution and rinse it off with cold water. Do not wring the jacket – instead, gently press down on the fabric to help expel the water. When done, pat the fabric dry with a towel.

Step 5: Toss It in the Washing Machine

Put jacket in the washing machine and set it to a gentle cycle. Use a fragrance-free laundry detergent or enzyme cleaner and add a small amount of white vinegar to the wash. When the cycle is finished, hang the jacket to dry.

Step 6: Give It a Final Check

Once the jacket is dry, give it one final check for any lingering stains. If any remain, spray the area again with a stain remover and let it sit for a few minutes before attempting to brush or pat the stain away.
