Step 1: Blot the Stain

The first step to getting rid of vomit stains is to blot the area with a dry, absorbent cloth. This will help to draw the liquid out of the fabric, reducing the size and intensity of the stain. Be sure to start from the outside of the stain and work your way into the center in order to avoid spreading the stain further.

Step 2: Pre-treat with Detergent

Once the stain has been blotted, pre-treat the area with a laundry detergent designed for use on colored fabrics. Apply the detergent directly onto the stain and scrub lightly with a soft-bristle brush. Allow the detergent to sit on the stain for 10-15 minutes before washing.

Step 3: Wash on Cold Cycle

When ready, place the garment in the washing machine and set to the cold cycle. Add a color-safe bleach, if desired, to help brighten the clothing. Once the cycle is complete, hang the item to dry, checking for any remaining stains before putting away.

Tips for Success

  • Always check care labels before cleaning.
  • Repeat cleaning process if necessary.
  • If the stain still remains, try soaking the item in a solution of vinegar and water.
  • Be mindful of not letting the stain sit too long, as this can cause the stain to become permanent.
