The first step in removing the stain is to blot it with a clean cloth or paper towel. This will help absorb some of the vomit residue without smearing it all over the fabric. You may also want to apply pressure to stain in order to remove more of it. Make sure to use a white cloth or paper towel, as the dye from a colored one may set the stain even deeper into the fabric.
Rinse fabric with cold water to help break down the vomit proteins and help remove the vomit residue. Be sure not to use hot water, as that could set the stain even further into the fabric. After rinsing, check the fabric to see if the stain has been lifted. If not, continue onto the next step.
If the vomit stain is still present, it is time to use a stain remover. Choose a product that is specifically designed for removing protein-based stains such as vomit. Follow the directions on the packaging to properly apply remover. Allow the stain remover to sit for at least 15 minutes before attempting to rinse it off.
After completing the above steps, it is time to wash the garment. Be sure to read the washing instructions on the tag of the garment. Generally, you will want to use cold water and the gentle cycle on your washing machine. For an extra measure of cleanliness, add a fabric-safe stain remover to the wash. Once complete, check the garment to make sure the stain is gone.
