What You'll Need

  • Cotton swab
  • Vinegar
  • Dish soap
  • Old toothbrush
  • Lint-free cloth

Step 1: Blot the Stain

The first step is to quickly blot the stain with a lint-free cloth. Be sure not to scrub the stain or press too hard; you don’t want to spread varnish around.

Step 2: Soak Stain

Once you’ve blotted away as much of the stain as possible, it’s time to soak area with a mixture of one part vinegar and two parts dish soap. Let the mixture sit on stain for at least 15 minutes.

Step 3: Scrub the Stain

After letting stain soak, use an old toothbrush to gently scrub the area. This will help loosen any remaining bits of varnish that you weren’t able to remove in the first two steps.

Step 4: Rinse and Dry

When you’ve scrubbed away as much of the stain as possible, rinse the area with clean water and blot dry with a lint-free cloth. Be sure to allow the fabric to air dry completely before wearing the tie again.
