Whether you have a cotton T-shirt, woolen dress, or a cotton blazer from Uniqlo, it's not uncommon for these pieces to suffer from varnish stains. Thankfully, all you need are supplies from your local grocery store and a bit of patience for them to be completely gone.

What You'll Need:

  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Sponge
  • Toothbrush / soft brush
  • Towel

Procedure:

  1. Mix white vinegar and baking soda into a paste.
  2. Soak a sponge in the paste and gently scrub the varnish stained area.
  3. Dab the paste off with a clean towel.
  4. Use a toothbrush to scrub the affected area, if necessary.
  5. Rinse off the paste residue with water.
  6. Let area dry.

You may need to repeat the process multiple times before stain is completely gone. It's also important to test the vinegar/baking soda mixture on an inconspicuous area of garment first to make sure that fabric can withstand it.

How to Prevent Future Varnish Stains:

  • Dry clean all fabrics labeled as 'dry clean only'
  • Be mindful of the chemicals used when refinishing furniture and floors
  • Protect clothing by wearing a smock when painting or refinishing furniture
  • If you are using spray type varnish, use a mask and wear clothes that you don't mind throwing away after
