Removing Varnish from Fabric or Canvas Umbrellas

If your umbrella is made of fabric or canvas, you'll need to take special care when cleaning. First, carefully scrape away any excess or dried varnish with a putty knife or other blunt edge. Then, apply a liberal amount of white vinegar directly to the stained area. Let it soak for a few minutes before using a damp cloth to wipe away the varnish. Once the stain is gone, rinse thoroughly with cold water and allow to air dry.

Cleaning Wooden Umbrellas

Wooden umbrellas can be more difficult to clean, but it is possible to remove varnish stains. Begin by using a putty knife to scrape away any excess or hardened varnish. Then, use a clean rag and white spirits or mineral spirits to carefully remove the remaining stain. Once all the varnish has been removed, use a damp cloth and warm soapy water to wipe away any traces of the spirits. Finally, dry completely and apply a wood finish to protect the surface.

Additional Tips

  • Always test a cleaning solution or product on a small, inconspicuous area of the umbrella first to make sure there won't be any adverse effects.
  • Wear gloves and safety goggles while cleaning to protect your skin and eyes.
  • Consider taking the umbrella to a professional cleaner if stain is particularly stubborn or if you are unsure of material type.
