Before starting, you'll need to collect a few things necessary for cleaning your trench coat.
The first step in removing a varnish stain from a trench coat is pretreating. Start by sprinkling a liberal amount of stain remover directly onto stain. Allow it to sit for the recommended duration as outlined in product instructions.
Once the stain remover has had time to work its magic, use the medium-bristle brush to lightly scrub the fabric. Focus the scrubbing motions only on stained area, and don't apply too much pressure. This should help to further break down the varnish.
Once you're done scrubbing, rinse fabric with cool water to remove the stain remover. This will also help to further break down any remaining varnish.
In a sink or bathtub, create a mixture of warm water and mild laundry detergent. Submerge the trench coat in detergent solution and gently agitate the fabric with your hands. Allow the coat to soak for at least one hour before rinsing with cool water.
Allow the coat to air dry away from direct sunlight. Once dry, inspect the fabric to make sure that all of the varnish stain has been removed. You may need to repeat steps 2 through 5 in order to completely remove the stain.
