Start by laying the tie on a flat surface. Be careful that the tie doesn't crease or wrinkle while cleaning it. If the varnish stain is fresh, you should start by removing as much of the residue as possible with a soft cloth. Once all the excess has been removed, mix together warm water and a mild detergent in a bowl. Use an old toothbrush to dab at the stain with this mixture. Be sure to avoid scrubbing the fabric too harshly as this could cause damage.
Once the varnish residue has been removed from the tie, lay it flat to dry. In order to prevent tie from getting wrinkled, gently stretch out the fabric as it dries. Once it is dry, use a soft cloth to remove any remaining dust or dirt from the fabric.
If the varnish stain is old or particularly stubborn, you may need to try a different method. Start by mixing equal parts vinegar and water in a bowl. Dab at the stained area with this mixture, paying special attention to working it into the fabric. Avoid making any harsh scrubbing motions as this could further damage fabric.
Once the vinegar and water mixture has been worked into the fabric, rinse it out with cold water. Allow tie to air dry, being sure to gently stretch out the fabric as it dries. Finally, use a soft cloth to wipe off any remaining residue.
With a bit of patience and the right materials, cleaning varnish stains from your ties is relatively easy. By following steps listed above, your tie can look like new and ready to be worn for any special occasion.
