Tartan is a fabric composed of horizontal and vertical stripes in a multi-colored pattern, usually with two or more colors. It is most popularly associated with traditional garb of Scotland. Varnish is a clear, glossy substance that is used to protect wood surfaces. It can cause significant staining if it is accidentally spilt over fabric such as tartan.
As soon as possible after spill, blot the stain with a large white towel. Press down on the stain gently and rotate cloth around beneath the stain to ensure that you absorb as much of the liquid as possible.
Once you have blotted off as much of the liquid as you can, use a butter knife to scrape off any remaining large clumps of varnish. Be careful not to push too hard, as you could potentially damage fabric.
Mix one tablespoon of liquid dish soap with two cups of warm water. Dip a white cloth into the solution and apply it directly to stain. Allow this to sit for about 10 minutes to give the solution time to work its magic.
Rinse the fabric with cool water. Make sure to rinse thoroughly, as any residual soap residue left behind could cause further discoloration.
Toss fabric in the washing machine and clean it as you would normally. Once the washing cycle has finished, hang the fabric up to dry.
